Vision: the ThermalPlant of the future

Vision: the ThermalPlant of the future

Let’s make it real

At Applied Smart Industry we believe the future of industrial operations is not ten years away. It’s being built now - one asset one insight, on real solution at a time.

To share that vision, we created the ThermalPlant - a small, elegant demonstration of how digital transformation is industry will look, feel, and perform in the coming decade.

It’s simple.

It’s tangible.

And it’s packed with the depth of tomorrow’s industrial reality.

What is the ThermalPlant?

At the heart of our setup is a stove-powered fan - an asset that coverts heat into motion, producing real physical output. But beneath its simplicity lies the richness of industrial complexity.

Thermal component:

Heat is generated and transferred.

Electrical component:

Voltage powers monitoring circuits.

Mechanical component:

A propeller spins, creating visible kinetic energy.

This is no longer a passive object. It’s an active, measurable, and intelligent machine - a prototype of tomorrow’s digitally connected industrial assets.

Let’s break it down

  • Just like real-world legacy equipment, our ThermalPlant didn’t come ready for data - we made it ready.

    We retrofitted it with:

    • 2 Temperature sensors

    • 1 Voltage sensor

    • 1 Proximity sensor for RPM tracking

Moral: Assets don’t have to be new. They have to be understood.

    Let’s make it real.

  • The raw sensor values flow through a protected architecture:

    • A DMZ proxy separates IT and OT.

    • A secured OPC-UA Server retrieves sensor data.

    • Authentication, encryption, and sage access are baked in.

This is how modern plants work - safely moving critical data from the physical world into the digital realm.

    Moral: Security isn’t a feature. It’s a foundation.

    Let’s make it real.

  • Once the data is out - it must go somewhere useful. We:

    • Push sensor values into a time-series database

    • Create dashboards

    • Enable monitoring and threshold alerts

This mirrors how organisations move from “data-rich” to “insight-driven”

Moral: If you can’t see it, you can’t fix it.

    Let’s make it real.

  • Here’s where things really get exciting.

    We apply:

    • Machine Learning for anomaly detection

    • Predictive analytics to identify early signs of failure

    • Custom alerts for off-nominal behaviour

    And it doesn’t stop there.

The plant even “listens” to itself through a microphone and sound-processing gateway, revealing new layers of intelligence from unstructured data like audio-unlocking unseen failure modes before they happen.

Moral: The future is not just measured. It’s sensed, learned and predicted.

    Let’s make it real.
